Difference between earthen and masonry forts?

So, I'm doing a project on Civil War forts for school. I can't find an answer to this, so what's the difference between earthen and masonry forts? I already know about masonry forts, but not that much about earthen forts, so I'd like to know what they're like and the main differences between the two type s of forts.
