Why does vinegar cause black crust on a masonry nail?

My son has been doing a science project on different liquids rusting nails. We used masonry nails for this. We can't figure out why vinegar has caused a thick black crust to form on the nails. We have looked up info everywhere and can't find out what the black crusty stuff is. He's only 9 so a simple answer would help.
